“I visited the school in 1982 with my dad. While doing construction work to build the school, we slept on the roof and took a shower with a bucket of water poured over us. I met a student Kettelie who was close to my age at the time and she invited me to come to her home. We walked through the dirt streets to her tiny one-room home. I was surprised that her family lived in this tiny place and I was aware of my own guilt for having so much more. In the evening we studied the Bible together and we were studying the book of James. The Bible came alive for me as I heard it speaking so clearly about the poor. I saw how Kettelie, who was poor in my eyes, had so much faith and joy. It was a life-changing experience as I realized that although I had come to serve in Haiti, the relationships built there and the experiences I had there also served me and changed me. I had received more than I had given and I was thankful. Years later I took each of my three children to Haiti and they, too, had life-changing experiences as their eyes were opened to another world and a faith that is so simple yet so deep. ”
“We found out about the Haiti Child Sponsorship through our friendship with Charlie and Mary Scott in Young Life. For many years and now, I give financial support because of the great value of education for those in need. And, we know it comes with the love of Christ.”
